London Security 2020 Where are we now? Over the last three years, the number of police officers working in London has increased by about 20%. Street and vehicle crimes have fallen by over 10%. Central London is covered in CCTV cameras, causing crime to get pushed out into the suburbs. By international standards however, even central London is not a low-crime zone. The UK's participation in the Iraq war may have increased the risk of a terrorist attack on London. Just like in the old IRA fear times, roads near sensitive buildings in the centre are again designed to avoid acts of terror, with occasional checkpoints. What are the authorities planning for the future? The Mayor wants to increase the number of police officers by a further 15% by 2008, to about 35,000, with the goal of making London a safer city. In September 2003, he unveiled his first draft of the London Safety Plan, which is meant to facilitate integrated risk management plans, also in case of catastrophic acts of terrorism or other major emergencies. How are government plans going to affect Euronet members?
