London 2020 - A think tank project of Euronet London What do you think London will look like in 2020? How would Euronet – out of all organisations – know what’s going to happen in 16 years? Is Euronet going overboard? Well, we are not, but we think many of our members would like to know what London might look like in the year 2020. Some Euronet members might be in a position of influence by then, either in business, social affairs or even local politics, or simply as employees, employers, commuters, house buyers, parents of school-age children etc. We are using this platform to give our members an opportunity to voice their interests, worries or hopes on the development of London as a cosmopolitan city. In seven topic areas on Transport 2020, Property 2020, Employment 2020, Entertainment 2020, Security 2020, Health 2020 and Education 2020, we explore the core issues that will be driving the development of London as a great place to live in. Is London moving towards a truly cosmopolitan capital city? In the 2001 census, a whopping 19% of the Greater London population, or about 1.6 million people, described their national identity as ‘other than British’. There are 37 foreign communities each with over 10,000 people living in London. Also, according to a fascinating article in The Economist in August 2003, the population in London grew 4.8% between 1991 and 2001, "partly because it has a high birth rate, but mostly because the foreigners started arriving. London’s net gain of foreigners was 120,000 in 2000." It also found that 67% of new immigrants to Britain come from high-income countries. The future of London There are 59 different nationalities represented among Euronet London members alone. We can safely conclude that London is becoming more ethnically diverse everyday. But with that there is also more economic polarisation. Euronet would like to kick off a debate amongst its members about seven core issues: Transport 2020, Property 2020, Employment 2020, Entertainment 2020, Security 2020, Health 2020 and Education 2020. We hope the presentation of these issues will stimulate your mind. It is built on our three initial questions:
Euronet debate sessions Euronet is going to hold a number of debate evenings on London 2020 issues. The kick-off debate will be held on Thursday, 4th March. Please click here for event details. This is your chance to participate in a fascinating discussion involving many important issues. So, register your interest in attending today. Vision London 2020 Report After a number of debate events and more research, we are planning to publish a report called “Vision London 2020” in the summer of 2004, which is meant to answer our fourth question:
This report will be sent to all members and with a press release to all major London print and electronic media. Please email us with your thoughts, comments, and ideas. We look forward to hearing from you. The London 2020 think tank is edited by Rufikat Ijaiya. Chapters have been written by Anne Bollet, Nadiah Scammell, Ralf Teschner and Rufikat. |
