London Education 2020

Where are we now?

With its young and culturally diverse population, London will always offer a wide variety of higher education, adult education and language tuition.

But by 2020, Euronet members are likely to be more interested in the primary and secondary education of their children. So, how does the British school system work? Children go to school between the age of 5 and 18. They leave school with the so-called A levels. Passing these final exams has become easier of the years. In the last 2 years of school, pupils sit only 3 different subjects, often closely linked to their later studies, limiting their breadth of knowledge. Government-funded state schools are free of charge, but often provide poorer education. Private schools, confusingly known as 'public schools', generally achieve better standards, but can cost a fortune.

(* Language tuition is offered by traditional language schools, The British Council and often by local libraries. Every September, The Corporation of London’s Education Service publishes “Spotlight”, a directory of more than 1000 adult education courses, designed to encourage continued learning.)

What are the authorities planning for the future?

For years, politicians have debated the merits of introducing the international baccalaureate exam standard, which requires pupils to study 6 subjects and is widely used across Europe. But it would revolutionalise the British education system steeped in tradition.

How are government plans going to affect Euronet members?

The focus on only 3 subjects in their last school years may appear too narrow for most foreigners who grew up in school systems with a far wider range of subjects and who would want their children to be educated in multiple disciplines and be prepared for a multi-channel world.
